Redeemer Lutheran Church Oak Doors

My recent project - Stripping and refinishing these solid Oak doors for the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Midtown. This is the finished product. The product used to refinish is from a company called Permachink. While the product is a bit pricey, I would recommend it if you can. It seems to be a superb quality compared to the alternatives and on a plus it is a environmentally friendly water based stain and topcoat with a 5 year warranty. I am very pleased to how these turned out. As you can tell from the before pictures these doors were in need for some tender loving care.

A closer look.

All ready for Sunday service.

Here I was applying the last 3rd coat of finish on the outside.

Right after the 3rd coat was applied.

The before shot of the bottom door, this was the worst area affected by the sun and weather damage.

Another before shot.

Close-up of the damage inflicted.

Scraping and stripping & sanding the profile was the most time consuming and difficult part of the project. I could only do so much at a time due to having to wait on my skin to regenerate on my fingers.

Getting close to being fully stripped down after lots of orbital sanding.

Here was the catch. To use the water-based product the doors had to actually be soaped, scrubbed and rinsed with a hose to make sure there were no traces of any oil-based stain or stripper left on the doors. This in turn required a re-sanding because of the water raised up all the fibers in the wood.

After drying out for a few days and sanding over with 220 grit we're ready for the stain.

This is after the stain and 1 coat of finish was applied.
